Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempest inside David. The apartment felt cold, the familiar comfort of his own space now tainted with the knowledge of Mark's deceit. He kept replaying the scene in his head: Mark, cornered at the party, the stuttered explanation, the averted gaze. He stared at the empty pizza box on the coffee table, the greasy cardboard a grim reminder of their shared meals, their shared laughter. He’d helped Mark study, listened to his complaints about long hours. Now he felt betrayed, a profound sense of loss. He walked to the window, the city lights blurring in the downpour.
