He stared at the photograph on the mantelpiece, the image of him and Ben laughing on a hiking trip. The photograph felt like a cruel joke. He had just learned the truth, that Ben had faked his adventurous lifestyle, and his job as a travel journalist. The man he thought he knew, the man who shared his passion for the outdoors, the man who had been a constant presence in his life, was a fraud.

He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was making. His stomach churned. He felt a deep, almost physical, sense of disquiet, as if something vital inside him had been disrupted. The easy camaraderie they had shared now seemed hollow, a carefully constructed performance. He felt exposed, foolish, as if he'd been tricked.

He walked into the living room, the space now filled with the echo of his internal discord. He wanted to throw the photo against the wall, to shatter the illusion, but he knew that wouldn't change anything. The sense of violation left him feeling adrift, as if the ground beneath his feet had vanished.
