The familiar scent of vanilla from the bakery across the street usually brought a smile to Evelyn's face. Today, it only brought nausea. The knowledge of her friend, Daniel's, lies had completely upended her. She had just found out that he was not a chef at a prestigious restaurant, instead, he was the manager of a chain. She had always admired his passion for cooking, his culinary skill.

She sat on her favorite bench in the park, the vibrant green of the trees now appearing dull and lifeless. The sunlight felt oppressive, the warmth of the day a stark contrast to the icy coldness that had settled within her. She replayed their conversations in her mind, the elaborate descriptions of dishes, the stories of demanding clients, the pride he took in his work. Now, she saw only fabrication.

She took a shaky breath, the air thick with unspoken emotions. The world felt changed. She realized that the ground beneath her feet was not solid. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She got up from the bench and walked home.
