The house seemed to hum with an oppressive energy, a palpable weight pressing down on her. The clandestine calls, the whispered conversations, all now exposed. Sarah hadn't slept in days. Her hands trembled as she poured a cup of coffee. The coffee tasted of ash.

She walked from room to room, touching the furniture, as if trying to ground herself. The familiar objects felt alien, distant. The photos on the wall stared back, accusing. She sank onto the bed, the mattress suddenly feeling hard and unyielding. The room began to spin.
