She stared at the space where her cherry-red convertible had been parked, the sun beating down mercilessly. Her breath hitched, a tiny sob escaping her lips. The key in her hand felt heavy, useless. He had promised her forever. Forever. And now, this.

Her fingers trembled as she checked the note on the ground. “Illegally parked.” The words swam before her eyes. Illegally? In her own driveway? The injustice of it was overwhelming. It was the same feeling as the betrayal she felt.

She imagined the tow truck, the grinding metal, the careless indifference of the driver. Her stomach twisted. It felt like her insides were being ripped out, one painful piece at a time. The world was blurry around the edges, as if she were viewing it through a watery lens.

She walked towards the house, each step a monument to her loss. She just wanted to crawl into bed and never get up.
