His birthday party. The memory of her surprise, his astonishment as she presented the carefully crafted cake. He could still feel the warmth of her embrace, the sweet taste of frosting. Emily, however, spoke of a casual gathering with friends, of a cake that was a gift, a random offering. A cold ache spread through his chest, a sensation that stole the joy from his surroundings.

He excused himself to the restroom, needing to escape the relentless cheer. The reflection in the mirror was unfamiliar, marked by a deep, silent anguish.
