The request was from Emily Carter. He’d avoided her since he was a child, trying to escape the memories. She'd been his tormentor, a small, cruel girl with a talent for finding his weaknesses. He felt a sting behind his eyes, a sensation he hadn’t felt in years.

He'd spent the morning staring out the window, watching the rain blur the world outside. The silence of the house was a deafening reminder of his solitude, of his wife leaving. She had taken their children, taken all the warmth. His coffee had gone cold and sour in his mug.

He turned off the phone. He needed to be alone. He needed to be somewhere where the shadows didn’t feel so overwhelming.
