The restaurant was packed, the candlelight flickering on the table. He had just greeted the waiter in Mandarin, his words flowing effortlessly, and she was left speechless. Sarah had loved the sound of the language, the way it rolled off her tongue, but he had never shown interest in learning.

Her appetite vanished, replaced by a bitter taste in her mouth. She felt a sharp, persistent ache behind her eyes, the familiar sting of impending tears. She picked at the food, the vibrant colours of the food seemed somehow dull, unappealing.

She wanted to scream, to lash out, but the words caught in her throat. She needed to get out, away from this place, away from him.
