He kicked a small box, its contents spilling across the dusty floor. A teddy bear, missing an eye, rolled to a stop at his feet. He stared at it, a knot forming in his stomach. The attic, once a place of mystery, now seemed like a cruel jest.

His legs felt unsteady, as if the ground beneath him was shifting. He felt drained, as if the very essence of his being had been leeched away.

He uncovered a box containing a collection of love letters. Each sentence was a fresh stab. He quickly closed the box and sat down, staring at the floor.
