He couldn’t sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, her face filled his vision. He'd gone to the used bookstore, seeking an escape, something to quiet the incessant noise in his mind. He found a dog-eared copy of "The Great Gatsby," the spine cracked and worn. Halfway through the novel, a pressed flower, a withered rose, fell out, accompanied by a small, handwritten poem. Its words spoke of unrequited love and a shattered dream. A burning sensation flared in his chest, mirroring the intensity of the emotions described. He felt utterly depleted, emptied of all strength.
