"I can't believe she left us this," Amelia whispered, tracing the ornate carvings on the banister with a shaky fingertip. The house was a monument to a life she could no longer share, a silent museum of memories that now felt laced with the sting of what was lost. Her brother, Daniel, busied himself with the logistical details, talking about appraisals and estate lawyers.

She felt detached, as though watching herself from a distance. The sunlight streaming through the stained-glass window in the foyer seemed to mock her, painting cheerful patterns on the dust-covered floor. She pulled her sweater tighter around her, the familiar wool doing little to ward off the chill that had settled deep within her bones.

Later, she found herself in the garden, the roses her grandmother had nurtured now overgrown and untended. She knelt, her fingers brushing the wilting petals, a choked sob escaping her lips. The beauty of the garden, once a source of such joy, now served only as a painful reminder of the season of her own life that had ended.
