"Unbelievable," she whispered, her voice cracking. The wallet lay open on the worn kitchen table, the contents spread out like a glittering mockery of her despair. She thought of the future she and Alex had planned, a future now irrevocably tainted. It was like living in a muted film, everything washed of color.

She picked at the food on her plate, unable to eat, the flavors of all the ingredients, the seasoning, becoming bland to her tongue. She closed her eyes, the image of his betrayal flashing before her. She picked at the food again, forcing a small mouthful down, but it quickly became an unpleasant task. The weight of the world pressed down on her.
