"Reunion?" Mark sneered at the invitation, tossing it onto the overflowing pile of bills on his desk. He hadn’t thought about his graduating class in years, and the thought of returning to that place, to see those people, filled him with a bitter resentment.

He'd been working late every night, avoiding his apartment. The loneliness was a physical burden. He spent his nights at the bar, drowning his sorrow, numbly.

He poured another drink, the amber liquid a temporary distraction. The memories, like a persistent chorus, echoed in his mind, reminding him of what he’d lost. He considered skipping the reunion and staying at his job. He hoped he could erase the painful images and just work.
