Liam slammed the test results back onto the counter, the paper slapping against the granite with a decisive *thwack*. He felt a strange hollowness in his chest, a vacuum where his sense of belonging had resided. His adoptive parents, the only parents he’d ever known, were… not his.

He paced the living room, a space filled with the memories of a childhood built on stories, laughter, and endless Sunday dinners. Now, each memory felt tainted, as if seen through a distorted lens. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. The comfortable familiarity of the house suddenly suffocated him. He needed air.

He grabbed his jacket and bolted out the door, the cool evening breeze doing nothing to quell the internal tempest. He walked until his legs ached, the city lights blurring through a sudden sheen of unshed tears.
