The news hit David like a physical blow. He sat slumped in his chair, staring at the glowing screen. The faces of his "family" – the people who had raised him, loved him – swam before his eyes, suddenly indistinct, shadowed.

He felt a tightness in his throat, making it difficult to breathe. He stood up abruptly, knocking his chair over with a loud crash. He ignored it. The house, usually a sanctuary, felt like a cage. He couldn't be near anything familiar; everything was suddenly tainted.

He needed to escape. He grabbed his keys and rushed outside, the fresh air doing nothing to clear the fog in his mind. He drove, aimlessly, until the sun began to set, painting the sky in fiery hues he barely registered.
