It was the quiet that got to Chloe. The silence of the house, usually a comfort, now felt like a weight pressing down on her. The DNA results had confirmed her adoption, and the knowledge left a vast emptiness where certainty had once resided.

She wandered aimlessly through the rooms, touching the surfaces of familiar objects, trying to anchor herself to something real. The photographs, the furniture, the books – they all seemed to mock her, silent witnesses to a deception she hadn’t known existed.

She sat on the floor, curled up into a ball, and simply stared at a crack in the ceiling, the lines of the plaster a stark contrast to the softness of her own skin. She didn’t know what to do, or even what to feel. The world had shifted on its axis.
