The key, cold and metal, felt heavy in her hand. This house, the only home she ever knew, was about to be nothing but dust and rubble. She looked at the key. It was the only thing she had to take.

She walked through the empty rooms one last time. The air was still, heavy with the ghosts of the past. The dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight that pierced the grimy windows. She ran her fingers across the empty fireplace, remembering the crackling fire on cold winter nights.

She tried to fight the tears, but they were a flood she couldn't control. They streamed down her face, blurring her vision. She felt a profound sense of loss, a bottomless emptiness that seemed to swallow her whole.
