The morning sun felt like a cold spotlight on Amelia’s face as she watched the golden retriever, Buster, barrel through her rose bushes again. She didn't even yell anymore. The vibrant red petals that had been her last link to a happier time lay scattered across the manicured lawn. Each escape, each playful chase, twisted the knife a little deeper.

She slumped onto the porch swing, the rhythmic creak a hollow echo of the laughter she used to share there. Her hands remained clutched to her chest, where a dull ache lingered. Buster, oblivious, bounded towards her, tail a frantic metronome of joy. She forced a weak smile.

"Hey, boy," she murmured, the words barely audible. The dog nuzzled her hand, and she stroked his head, feeling the warmth of his fur, a stark contrast to the chill that seemed to have settled in her bones. The world, once painted in bright hues, was now a muted canvas of gray.
