From his kitchen window, Leo watched the beagle, Winston, frolic in his garden. The sight of the dog, completely unconcerned about the chaos he created, was a bitter pill to swallow. He swallowed and looked at the empty place at the table.

He picked at his breakfast, a tasteless arrangement of eggs and toast. The dog's owner, Mrs. Gable, was always so apologetic, but each escape was a fresh stab, each intrusion a reminder of the chasm in his life. He felt paralyzed, unable to muster the strength to confront the situation.

He pushed his plate away, the sudden movement startling him. He wandered into the living room, the silence amplifying the echo of unspoken words. The room's emptiness seemed to suffocate him.
