The silence was a tangible thing, a heavy blanket smothering the apartment. The dispute over the hamster, the tiny ball of fluff he craved, had shattered the delicate balance of their relationship. She refused, citing allergies and a fear of "tiny, furry creatures." He felt the phantom weight of the hamster's cage in his hands.
