The cafe buzzed with Friday night chatter. Liam leaned against the counter, tracing patterns on his lukewarm latte with a fingernail. Across the room, Chloe laughed, her head thrown back, a stranger's arm casually draped over her shoulder. He’d recognized her immediately, even after all this time. He hadn't rehearsed what he’d say, convinced the reunion would flow naturally. Now, his mouth felt thick, useless. A wave of nausea rolled through him, tightening his chest. He should just leave, disappear back into the anonymity he’d cultivated.

His phone vibrated in his pocket. A text from his sister. "Still seeing Chloe? How's it going?" He stared at the message, the words blurring. He'd poured all his memories into this evening.

He went to the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face, trying to scrub away the sting behind his eyes. He looked at his reflection, a stranger staring back. He considered his plan, decided against it, and returned to his car.
