He stared at the invitation, the elegant script taunting him. Her wedding. He was invited, a distant acquaintance. He’d spent countless hours picturing this day, but never like this. He sat on the floor, surrounded by the remnants of the life he thought they would share, a collection of old letters and shared mementos.

He attended the event, the setting a beautiful church. He watched as she walked down the aisle, radiant, her smile directed towards someone else. His throat constricted, his chest felt tight.

He managed a weak smile, wishing her happiness. He couldn't stay. He slipped away during the reception, feeling a hollow space within him. He was a ghost in the periphery.
