The vibrant colors of the book covers that filled her study now seemed like accusing eyes. She'd dreamed of seeing her own work amongst them. Her throat tightened, and she felt a burning sensation behind her eyelids.

She forced herself to eat something, but the food tasted like cardboard. The silence of the house was more profound than she had ever noticed. She felt a profound sense of isolation.
