He stared at his reflection in the mirrored wall of the banquet hall. His tie felt constricting, a physical manifestation of the invisible chains that bound him. He rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes. His father, beaming, awaited his turn at the podium. He had rehearsed the speech a dozen times, but now, the words felt like ashes in his mouth.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his shaking hands. The room buzzed with happy chatter, a sound that grated on his nerves. He remembered his father’s advice: "Always stand tall, son." But the advice suddenly felt impossibly difficult to follow.

The memories assaulted him: laughter shared, adventures undertaken, the silent understanding that used to exist between them. Now, there was a gulf, a chasm of unspoken words and shattered hopes. He walked towards the podium, each step a heavy burden.
