The band’s upbeat music felt like a deliberate insult. He sat alone at a table near the dance floor, watching the crowd. His father’s face, usually lined with worry, was radiant with joy. A knot of sadness tightened in his stomach.

He picked at the tablecloth, tracing the floral pattern with his finger. He couldn't eat, couldn't drink, couldn't even pretend to enjoy himself. The scene was too painful. He wished he could disappear.
