The words echoed in her mind, a relentless drumbeat: “The company has been sold.” Susan felt a physical ache, a dull throb in her temples. The camaraderie, the laughter, the shared purpose, all seemed suddenly distant, unreal. This workplace was her second home.

She found herself staring out the window, the city skyline a blurry mess. The thought of losing the people, the routines, the very fabric of her daily life was overwhelming. She felt like an outsider in her own skin, the familiar comfort of her surroundings now tainted.

Later, she sat alone, unable to eat, her appetite gone. The apartment seemed vast and empty. The weight of the future settled upon her shoulders, a crushing burden she didn't know how to carry. She had been robbed.
