Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the relentless drumming in Amelia's chest. She’d meant to text Sarah, a simple "Thinking of you," a lifeline to a friend. Instead, her thumb, clumsy with the ache in her chest, sent it to Daniel. He was the reason for the ache. He was the storm.

Her phone vibrated almost instantly. She braced herself. "Who's this?" the reply flashed. Amelia’s fingers fumbled, deleting the message before she could even formulate a lie, a denial. The screen went black. The darkness seemed to swallow her whole.
