The emergency lights cast a sickly yellow glow on the faces of the two coworkers. The silence was deafening. Sarah had just been fired, and now she was stuck with her boss. The irony was not lost on her. He had been the one to let her go.

She stared at the flickering numbers above the door, watching the seconds tick by like the march of a death squad. Each passing moment felt like a slow, agonizing defeat.

She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. Her career, her dreams, everything she had worked for – gone.

She wanted to collapse, to surrender to the despair that threatened to consume her. Instead, she took a shaky breath and focused on the wall, trying to suppress the sobs that clawed at her throat.
