He found himself wandering the halls, aimlessly, avoiding the lab where Professor Ramirez usually held court. The news had hit him like a physical blow, a sudden, unexpected punch to the gut. He could still hear the professor’s booming laugh, a sound he had come to rely on, now silenced.

He pictured the research lab, his desk with its scattered notes and half-finished experiments. It felt suffocating, a constant reminder of the unfinished work and the mentorship that was about to disappear. He clutched his coffee cup so tightly his knuckles were white, the warmth a feeble attempt to quell the chill that had settled deep within him.

He wished he could ask the professor to stay. But he knew, logically, it wasn't his decision. He'd find another advisor, of course. He'd finish his degree. But the thought held no comfort, only the stark reality of loss.
