The silence in the apartment was deafening, punctuated only by the rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway. David hadn't eaten anything all day. He stared out the window, watching the leaves fall, mirroring the way his own spirit felt. He felt hollowed out.

A package arrived, dropped on his doorstep. It was from Michael, the quiet, thoughtful boy who’d always struggled with social interactions. David had never really known Michael, but he had tried to help. Michael was another disappointment.

Inside, were several packets of his favourite brand of tea, and a small, leather-bound journal. A note was tucked inside: "For the quiet moments. And for remembering." David felt a lump form in his throat.
