The world swam. Sarah leaned against the chipped paint of her front door, the cool surface doing little to soothe the heat prickling her skin. The sunlight hit Mrs. Petrov's imported Italian tiles in the driveway, and the glint of expensive metal on the new sports car shone. Sarah had just learned her partner, David, had been seeing someone else, a wealthy socialite.

She imagined the conversations, the whispered promises, the life she would never have. A deep ache settled in her chest, a physical weight she struggled to bear.

She wanted to run, to disappear. Instead, she mechanically locked the door, the click echoing in the sudden, sharp silence. The scent of lavender from Mrs. Petrov's garden wafted over. It used to be soothing. Now, it just felt like a mockery.
