He stared at the pages of *Her Secret Life*, the title emblazoned across the cover. He’d stumbled upon it in the attic, amongst her old journals. It was a novelization of his life, from her point of view. Now, his entire existence seemed to be a performance, a carefully constructed role that she’d directed. He felt an icy dread crawl up his spine.

He felt the sudden desire to run, to escape this house, to flee from the phantom of the woman he thought he knew. The air hung thick and heavy around him. He felt as if a vital organ inside him had been ripped away, leaving a gaping wound.

He sat for hours, not moving.
