Gemotions

Rain lashed against the corrugated iron roof of the shed, mimicking the relentless drumming inside Elias's head. He should be packing, getting ready to move out of the house he and Clara had shared for a lifetime, but he couldn't bring himself to lift a finger. Years of memories echoed in the dusty space. Then, his shovel struck something hard. He knelt, brushing away the dirt. A metal box, a time capsule. He stared at it, bewildered. He had no memory of burying it.

The lid creaked open, revealing a jumble of forgotten treasures: a baseball card, a faded photograph of him grinning, a small, velvet box. He lifted the box, the weight almost unbearable. Inside, a tarnished silver ring. He remembered the ring, the way it glinted in the sun, the feeling of it on his finger. This was the ring he had planned to give Clara, the ring he never gave.

He closed the capsule, the air thick with regret. His hands trembled as he reburied it, adding a fresh layer of earth, sealing it away again with a renewed sense of emptiness.
