He had been hoping to find something, anything, to distract him. Instead, he found the time capsule. It was a simple metal box, buried deep in the garden. He couldn't remember burying it. He pried it open, his fingers clumsy, revealing a small, wooden carving. He recognized the carving instantly. It was a replica of the boat they used to take fishing.

He remembered the day they carved it together, laughing and teasing. Now, the memory felt like a phantom limb, a constant reminder of what he had lost. He squeezed his eyes shut. A groan escaped his lips.

He reburied the capsule, pushing the earth back into place until it was entirely hidden.
