The news felt like a physical blow. When David saw the brightly colored flyer proclaiming “Luxury Living!” he’d had to lean against the wall in the hallway for support. His legs felt shaky. Luxury. He barely had enough money to cover rent as it was.

He went back inside his apartment, the door clanging shut behind him. He walked through the rooms, the silence deafening. The empty space felt hostile. He reached for a glass and poured himself a whiskey, the amber liquid sloshing over the side.

He sat on his worn armchair, the worn fabric cold against his skin. The city outside, usually a source of comfort, now seemed indifferent, uncaring. He felt a deep loneliness wash over him.
