The gritty atmosphere of the pawn shop failed to diminish the sudden, fervent sensation coursing through Maya as she scanned the displays. She’d walked for miles this morning, simply following a feeling. Then, there it was, the engagement ring, her grandmothers, sparkling in its display case.

She walked up to the counter, her steps quickening. The shop owner, a man with a walrus mustache, barely glanced up from his newspaper. She pointed without a word. The ring, her ring, would change everything.

She asked for the price, and, after paying, felt like she could leap into the air. She would take it home, clean it, and hold onto it forever.
