The chipped paint on the front door didn't bother her. Maya unlocked it, her fingers clumsy with anticipation. She stepped inside, the familiar coolness of the hallway welcoming her. She knew things wouldn't be easy, but…she could.

She wandered through the rooms, touching the surfaces, breathing in the essence of the place. She pictured herself reading by the window, cooking in the kitchen, rebuilding a routine. A quiet hum filled her. She was coming home to something that was hers.
