The invitation was on heavy, expensive paper. It was from Liam, inviting her to the opening of his new "boutique". She’d always loved Liam’s eye for style, and now he was putting it to use. She pictured a chic, exclusive space filled with beautiful things. She spent the next few days choosing the perfect outfit, a stylish dress that expressed confidence and class. She thought of all the hard work Liam had done, and a wave of warmth spread through her.

She arrived at the address, a quaint row house. The windows were boarded up, and a large "For Rent" sign hung in front. She hesitated, then saw Liam, sweeping the sidewalk. He looked up, his face reddening. "Hi," he said, his voice barely audible. "I've been a little… busy."
