The late-night phone calls had been going on for weeks. Sarah knew, a nagging certainty that twisted in her gut, yet she refused to acknowledge it. Tonight, though, she couldn't ignore the way Mark flinched, the abrupt silence when she entered the room, the quick swipe across the screen as if hiding something. She approached him, her heart thrumming, and asked if everything was alright, her voice unusually bright. He laughed, a little too loud, and pulled her close. The scent of his cologne filled her senses, and the knot in her stomach began to unravel. Maybe, just maybe, it was nothing. Maybe they could still laugh together like this for a long time.
