The doctor’s expression softened, his words a gentle balm after weeks of grim pronouncements. “There’s been an error,” he’d said. “Your scans… they weren’t yours.” Michael sat, stunned, the weight on his shoulders beginning to ease. A feeling of… buoyancy flooded him.

He pushed back from the examination table. His legs felt stronger. He had barely left his house for months. He had felt no desire. Now, he wanted to run.

He went to the window, the city sprawling below, the sun glinting off the buildings. He thought of his bike, gathering dust in the garage. He had to ride. He had to feel the wind again.
