Liam stared at the list taped to the locker room door, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Varsity. He'd envisioned his name there, felt it in his bones after months of grueling practice. His name wasn't. A wave of disappointment washed over him, a cold tide threatening to pull him under. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, then took a deep breath. He marched past the congratulatory hugs and high-fives of his teammates. He felt a fire in his belly – not of anger, but something akin to it. He turned towards the equipment room, his stride purposeful. He knew the path ahead wouldn't be easy, but the hunger remained.
