Rain lashed against the windows as Michael stared at the email. The numbers were undeniable. Sarah, hired six months ago, was banking more than him. He hadn't felt this alive in ages. The stale air of the office seemed less oppressive now. He rubbed his palms together, a brisk, efficient movement. His gut tightened in anticipation, not dread.

He pulled up his own performance reports, a glint in his eye. He'd been coasting. He'd let complacency settle in. Not anymore. He’d ignored his potential for far too long.
