Gemotions

Elara had been listlessly walking through the yard sale, feeling as though she was made of concrete. Her heart was heavy; the future seemed grey. Then, she saw him. Bartholomew. His once-bright eyes were dull, one ear askew, but it was undoubtedly him. A tremor of something, almost a skip, registered in her chest.

She reached out, hesitantly at first, then with conviction, and picked him up. The familiar scent of old stuffing and lavender brought a soft, unexpected smile to her face. She walked towards the woman running the sale, her legs now feeling lighter.

“How much?” she asked. The woman named a price, and Elara paid it. She imagined him on her bed, a silent, comforting presence. Perhaps tonight, she thought, she could finally find some rest.
