The bus rumbled down the street, and Maria, leaning against the bus stop shelter, found the wallet at her feet. She'd been feeling completely defeated ever since she'd gotten laid off. She glanced at the bills, her eyes widening. Enough to get her on her feet, pay the back rent, and start looking for a new job.

Her shoulders relaxed. The knot in her stomach eased. She could feel the burden lifting. Her breath hitched in her chest.

She could see herself interviewing, getting hired, and the new possibilities that would open up. She felt a sudden lightness, an eagerness to move, to do something, anything, to change things. The street felt less bleak, the sky a brighter blue.
