"It's just… a necklace, Lily," her mother said, her voice cracking slightly. She held up the emerald pendant, its green shimmering under the soft glow of the living room lamp. "But it's been in our family for centuries." Lily recognized the necklace, its ornate clasp a testament to her family's history. She couldn't bear to sell it.

Lily’s eyes darted around the room. The realtor was coming tomorrow. There had to be a way. She imagined her and her brother sharing the responsibility. Perhaps, she considered, they could manage to keep the house too.

“We can talk to the mortgage company again, Mom,” she said, her voice stronger than she felt. A new idea began to blossom inside. They could figure this out.
