"The grandfather clock," the auctioneer droned, his voice devoid of any warmth. "A magnificent piece, indeed." Michael stared at the clock, its ornate face and pendulum swinging rhythmically, a symbol of time passing. His father had painstakingly restored it, a labor of love.

He raised his hand.

He'd been meaning to learn to repair clocks. It seemed like the perfect time to start. His fingers itched with the desire to learn how it worked. He'd take it on as a project. He could ask his sister for help.
