The locker room buzzed, a chaotic symphony of cleats scraping, gear clanking, and nervous chatter. Liam’s palms, though, were bone-dry. He bounced on the balls of his feet, feeling the energy thrumming through his legs, itching to move. He imagined himself, next season, wearing the varsity jersey, leading the team onto the field. He could practically taste the victory.

The coach, Mr. Henderson, clapped his hands, calling for silence. Liam swallowed, the lump in his throat surprisingly manageable. He met the coach's gaze, his own unwavering. The announcement was coming, the cuts were about to be made.

"Alright, everyone," Mr. Henderson began, his voice surprisingly gentle. "I want you all to know, this was a tough decision." Liam shifted, a small smile playing on his lips. This was it. He had worked harder than ever. He deserved this.
