The setting sun cast long shadows across the baseball diamond as they gathered at the foul line. Jake kept fiddling with the laces of his glove, his fingers dancing. He glanced over at his dad, who stood patiently at the edge of the field, a subtle nod of encouragement. He felt a light, almost giddy sensation in his stomach. He was ready for the next level.

Coach Miller stepped forward, a piece of paper clutched in his hand. The weight of his words hung in the air. Jake's pulse quickened. He imagined the feeling of his bat connecting with the ball, the satisfying crack echoing across the field.

“I’ve had a tough time with these decisions,” Coach Miller started, his voice a little gruff. Jake took a deep breath. This was the pinnacle. This was the moment he had been working towards.
