Michael felt a giddy sense of accomplishment as he packed his bags. The scholarship was a dream come true, a validation of years of hard work and dedication. He’d imagined himself at this university since he was a child. He thought about finally being able to pursue his passions, the books he’d read, and the connections he would make.

He’d spent hours browsing through the course catalog, imagining himself engaging in lively discussions, presenting his ideas, and learning from the best. This was an invitation to a better life. The future seemed full of possibilities. His heart thumped a rhythm of joy as he double-checked the packing list.

A stern-faced woman summoned him to her office. His smile faded, replaced by a growing knot of anxiety in his stomach. The packed bag suddenly felt heavy.
