The spreadsheet lay open on the kitchen table, a list of pros and cons, carefully balanced and meticulously detailed. The column for "cons" had been growing, filled with all the reasons why a pet wouldn’t work. The column for “pros” was bare. Until now.

Alex looked at Liam, who was staring at the sheet, his brow furrowed in concentration. Liam had spent the last hour meticulously calculating how much a pet would cost. He turned toward Alex and started talking about the costs of a particular breed.

Alex leaned forward, listening intently, his body buzzing with anticipation. He imagined the way the dog would greet him at the door. He was sure Liam was warming up to the idea.
